Study Shows Correlation Between Self Image Issue

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 17, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While many use tanning beds for the improvement of their look through darker skin tone, new research shows that half of young adults who use the tanning beds are unhappy with their looks.

The Cancer Research UK showed that 45% of 18 to 34-year-olds who utilize the beds for tanning are still unhappy with their bodies as a whole. Another 30% of individuals the demographic do so simply to look more attractive.

A whopping 80% of the unhappy sunbed users state that social pressures are at least part of the reason for tanning, while 29% state they are influenced by peers. Another 30% of the tanners state they were influenced by famous individuals who tanned, and almost half (45%) state the media had an influence in their tanning choice.

Only 46% of young adults who have avoided sunbeds are unhappy with their appearance, which points to some correlation between the bed use and personal image issues. The study does not purport to note what aspect is the cause of the other.

Senior Health Campaigns Manager at the Cancer Research UK group, Caroline Cerny, stated: “We live in an image-obsessed culture and know many sunbed users continue to use them because they think they look better with a tan. But actually they are making their skin look worse in the long run. The more unhappy they are with the skin they’re in, the more they may use sunbeds – it’s a vicious circle. Sunbeds can result in premature aging and wrinkles, as well as increased pigmentation on the skin. No one wants to look older before their time, and crucially, using sunbeds also increases the risk of skin cancer.”

While this information points to the cause and interest in tanning, health regulators are beginning to look into the adding tanning beds to a list of products like alcohol and cigarettes, thanks to its cancer-causing properties. Research from the Southwestern University within Texas noted that those who crave a tan all-year round seem express addictive qualities when it comes to sunbed use.

The connectivity between tanning beds, added with its ability to cause the development of cancer, means that it is likely to be added to the list of addictive and harmful products.
