Students Push for Tanless Graduation

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 17, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- At Thunder Bay high school, students are rallying for a tan-free graduation. Students at the Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute launched a Canadian Cancer Society TanFree Grad initiative recently. The initiative is to help inform students about the risks of cancer that are associated with the usage of standard tanning beds.

The students hosted a display at the school in order to help inform the students of the general cause and specific studies that are highlighted to emphasize the initiatives purpose.

“At the display, we will be asking graduates to sign a pledge to remain tan free and to support a legislative ban on tanning bed use by anyone under the age of 18,” Tan-Free Grad organizer Alyssa Johnston said Wednesday.

“We hope that this, combined with our previous efforts, will really drive the message home that there is no safe way to get a tan and that tanning can have severe consequences,” she said.

Students from Sir Winston Churchill have participated in campaigns in the past, and have organized differing events through the year to highlight the growing concern of tanning bed use, as well as continuous tanning in general. The student-run movements have been backed by the local legislation, and were introduced by the Liberal government last month, which is looking to ban any tanning bed usage for those under the age of eighteen.

The proposed legislation will force businesses to card anyone who appears to be under the age of 25 for use of a tanning bed, as the items have been found by recent research to be both addictive and cancer-causing.

According to the Ministry of Health, the average usage of the tanning beds is 10 times per year, with almost one-in-four youth tanners already having used a tanning bed for more than 24 months. That is a concerning number because the rise of melanoma seems to be directly linked to the onset of melanoma.

A 2012 Canadian Society Study exposed the fact that 16% of Ontario high school juniors and seniors have used tanning beds prior to graduation. The new initiative by students hopes to curb that number down zero.
