(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 18, 2013 ) Dallas, TX -- As breast cancers are divided into four groups based on the genetic makeup of the cancer cells, individualized treatment is selected to treat each specific type of cancer. However, certain cancers have been tricky to treat because of their non-response to targeting treatments. In a new study by UCLA researchers, a promising new treatment shows that using small, diamond-like particles, called nanodiamonds, to target receptors may be effective.
What are Nanodiamonds?
Nanodiamonds are extremely small diamonds, almost like diamond dust, between 5 and 6 nanometers in diameter (less than .0000000007 of a centimeter). By using this procedure based on mining and refining techniques, doctors can attach the nanodiamonds to cancer-fighting drugs to better target and and attract tumors.
Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is often so hard to treat it almost always requires the most aggressive forms of chemotherapy that come with their own side effects and problem diseases of their own.
Nanodiamonds May Reduce the Amount of Drugs Needed in Chemotherapy
The team researching the effectiveness of the nanodiamonds found that when they were combined with Epirubicin, a very highly toxic yet commonly used treatment in chemotherapy, less of that drug was needed to target the cancer. Because of this, side effects that often come from the toxicity of Epirubicin, such as heart and kidney failure, may be lessened.
The findings of the study were published in the April 15, 2013 issue of Advanced Materials, a peer-reviewed medical journal. It was supported by several cancer institutes, including The American Cancer Society and The George Williams Hooper Foundation.
