(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 18, 2013 ) Peoria, AZ -- According to a new study released by Drexel University, adults that had jobs as teenagers were more likely to be successful as adults.
Whether a teen takes a job for summer employment or decides to wait tables at a local restaurant after school, the work ethic they learn early in life has a huge impact on their success as an adult. Paul Harrington, an economist and lead author, says that the study showed that work experience is the best way to prepare teens for the constant work environment later in life.
Research findings
The study found that teens who held at least a part time summer job showed a 20 to 25 percent salary increase later in life, whether or not the job was related to what they had done in high school. Being able to manage a successful high school career and side job is a good indication that a person will be able to handle the demands of college and then work later in life.
An Omaha Fox News article jumped at the chance to report the findings of the study by highlighting several work study programs in the area to help young kids get involved.
Finding the Perfect Fit
Holding a minimum wage job isnÂ’t the only option teens have. For a teen looking into an early childhood development or teaching career, offering babysitting services during the evenings or weekends is a great way to earn cash, and depending on the ages of children, can be fairly simple. For another teen, veterinary services may be a dream. Pet sitting for families during vacation may bring an unexpecting earnings potential, especially if there isnÂ’t a kennel available in the area.
There is no shame in fast food or construction work. No matter what the type of work, having a job helps set the foundation for a successful and responsible future.
