Study Shows Wall Street Analysts Wrong Half the Time

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Those investors who have reached a particular level of sophistication know all about the moving of billions of dollars each and every day thanks to the advice of Wall Street analysts. However, new research is beginning to unearth the fact that such analysts may be punching outside their weight class, and that retail investors may not the be gurus they want to be viewed as.

Numbers from the NerdWallet investigation have shown that the spectrum of analysts in regards to the Dow 30 in the 2012 fiscal year did not pick quite as well as they would hope. In fact, some of their numbers were shockingly dismal for anyone looking to back the practice of following such advice.

The major findings of the study showed that a mere 41% of analysts were correct in the Dow 30 ratings for the 2012 calendar year. That means that it was a veritable pick'em when it came to conflicting ratings on any one guess. A flip of a coin actually would give a person statistically similar positive outcomes when choosing.

Also noted in the study was the fight that the average analyst portfolio only marginally beat the basic market numbers. Any person who mimicked a portfolio after an analyst could expect to outperform the the Dow by 4.1%.

Still, with the lack of quality numbers in accuracy, analysts were able to identify a winning stock or sector better than the average traders. Analysts had over 70% of their buy ratings correct, and buys made were up by over 80% across their accurate ratings. Of analyst ratings, hold ratings performed the poorest, and saw only one-in-five playing out as was expected.

Overall, the performance was poor for analysts, and that shows that the truth of the matter is that personal trading hobbyists hold little hope for picking stocks correctly. If the professionals have a tough time hanging on to a good run of correct picks, then there is little hope for the average trader.
