While retirement is a great way for seniors to enjoy their Golden Years, being ill prepared can cause a number of financial issues. Based on the infographic, 6,000 Americans reach the age of 65 per day. 35% of these senior Americans also rely solely on Social Security to make ends meet. This includes monthly benefits, along with medical coverage and additional stipends. The infographic also states the average savings of a 50 year old at $43,797. While this may be sufficient to some, it is hardly enough for seniors to sustain everyday living after retirement. This is especially true with medical treatments, which costs $215,000 for senior couples over a 20 year span.
With 13% of the U.S. population at 65 years of age or older, approximately 36% of these Americans have saved nothing for retirement. These are alarming figures that have even impacted Americans under 65. In fact, 80% of Americans 30-54 years of age believe they will not have enough money for retirement. This is due to the down economy, along with the ongoing fiscal crisis and countless other expenses.
The infographic also lists the number of Americans age 65 and over that are still in the workforce. These numbers, however, are surprisingly high. While Americans are living longer, seniors that cannot afford retirement simply continue to work. In fact, 2010 figures show male Americans 75 years or older as 8.6% of the workforce. Women that same age comprise 3.9% of the workforce. This only cements the fact that most seniors simply do not have the means to secure a peaceful and financially independent retirement.
The infographic also showcases the amounts needed in savings for retirement. This includes monthly income, along with 20 to 30 year earnings that entail accumulative savings.
