Soccer Plus Launches New Infographic on Interesting Soccer Facts

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 23, 2013 ) Pasadena, CA -- Soccer Plus recently released a new infographic about the global popularity of soccer. Also known as football, soccer is the most played and most popular team sport on earth. SoccerÂ’s equivalent of the World Series and Super Bowl is its FIFA World Cup, which is held every four years. With amazing and interesting facts about this rapidly growing sport, this informative graphic is simply a must for any die-hard or casual soccer fan.

According to the infograph, the word “soccer” originated in the 1880’s in England. In fact, the term was coined at the prestigious Oxford University. While the official name of the sport is “Association Football”, soccer is simply easier to say and more catchy. Based on the infographic, the average soccer player runs about 7 miles during an entire game. While Pele is considered a soccer icon and legend, his signature bicycle kick dates back to 1914. In fact, the first bicycle kick was performed that year at El Morro Stadium in Talcahuano, Chile.

The first goal scored directly from a corner kick was in 1924. This was simply known as an Olympic kick, and continues to be heavily utilized today. While soccer has been around for centuries, the first live coverage of a soccer match was shown on television in 1937. Referee whistles were also introduced in 1878, while the first ever soccer match took place in Derby, England.

While soccer is truly an international sport, radical fans across the globe have continued to plague countless games and tournaments. This “mob soccer” mentality actually goes back to the 7th and 9th centuries. During this time period, a soccer match took place between two rival villages. This game simply set a precedent for today’s wild fans that tend to get out of hand when cheering on their favorite teams or clubs.

The infographic also discusses the evolution of the soccer ball in great detail. As the governing body of soccer, FIFA has set the current ball at 71 centimeters (28 inches) around its circumference. As a surprising fact, over 80% of todayÂ’s soccer balls are proudly made in Pakistan. As previously mentioned, Pele is considered the greatest soccer player of all time. In fact, he led Brazil to a FIFA World Cup Championship at just 17 years of age.

Pele, real name Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, is also the only player ever to have won the World Cup three times. In his illustrious career, Pele scored an unprecedented 1,281 goals as well. While Pele even mastered the art of soccer ball juggling, it is fellow Brazilian, Martinho Eduardo Orige that holds the world record. Martinho set this record back in 2003, by successfully juggling a soccer ball for 19 hours and 30 minutes.

While Pele remains a popular global figure, it seems he passed the torch to David Beckham of England. Beckham is the richest soccer player in the world, with total earnings exceeding $50 million.
