AmericaÂ’s Driving Boom is Over

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 23, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study by the U.S. Public Research Group (or PIRG), Americans have slowly stopped adding more vehicles to their family fleet and are waiting longer to get licensed and are turning to mass-transit more than ever.

The study says itÂ’s time to hit the reset button on the American auto industry and start looking at more efficient ways to get around town. With higher gas prices and enough environmental problems as there are, adding more pollution to the and more debt to credit cards need to be replaced with different needs in the 21st century.

If the trend continues, where Americans are carpooling, using taxis, amtraks and other mass transits, it could be the biggest cultural shift in American history, and one of the most responsible. The researchers noted that vehicles became increasingly popular post World War II, when the economy boomed and families needed, and could afford, more than one vehicle.

However, researchers arenÂ’t exactly sure why the trend is happening. There doesnÂ’t seem to be a specific demographic group that the study leans towards, but most of the information gathered was from the millennial generation, most certainly because they have started to see and understand the side effects of driving cars and better ways to get from place to place.

Perhaps itÂ’s the fact America is in the worst financial slump than it has been since the Great Depression. With gas prices that continue to worsen with no indication of going back back down, PIRG estimates that the trend is likely to be long term.

Motorists aged 16-34 logged about 23 percent less mileage than a study of the same group back in 2001, and theyÂ’re learning to use public transportation more often. This may be because urban sprawl has picked up over the last few years, and with overpopulation of houses and businesses, there isnÂ’t room in cities to have personal cars.
