(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 26, 2013 ) Austin, TX -- Larry Brown, a 58 year-old veteran was beaten and robbed in shortly after midnight on Monday morning.
According to investigators, Brown heard the doorbell and thought it might have been a neighbor checking in on him. He lives alone and has nursing care 7 days a week, so visitors come and go fairly often.
When he answered the door however, several men in masks and clothes covering their faces put a gun to his throat and staring ransacking his home.
“It took me by surprise, I didn’t expect nothing like that,” said Brown, “[They] pinned me on the bed, got on top, and put a gun to my throat and all that.”
They also beat Brown, punching him several times in the chest. The suspects took $200 in cash, a flat screen television, some jewelry and all of BrownÂ’s medication.
Police are investigating BrownÂ’s home, hoping that some sort of evidence will turn up that will help lead them to the suspects.
Investigators believe that he may have been targeted since his wheelchair ramp is visible outside his home.
It is unclear whether Brown had a home security system, but even if a homeowner doesnÂ’t have one, there are several precautions they can take to prevent burglaries.
By making sure all windows and doors are locked when no one is in the home it can deter amatuer intruders from trying to break in. Also, having motion-sensored security lights that help to keep doors and walkways lit up will help prevent invasions. A door should never be opened for someone without first checking to see who is outside waiting.
