(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 26, 2013 ) Houston, TX -- Contrary to what television and movies show us, burglaries generally donÂ’t happen at night time. In fact, according to Lt. Chris Hsiung with Mountain View Police Department in California, robberies tend to happen during the day while families are at work and school.
Home security programs can cost up to $1,000 a month with outrageous setup and maintenance fees. However, the best deterrents for home invaders, Hsiung says, is a multiple of precautions taken to dissuade thieves from wanting to make your house a target.
Thieves often pose as solicitors during the day. This is a way to find out if anyone is home or not, giving them the opportunity to break in if no one answers the door. For starters, all windows and doors should be locked before someone leaves a house empty of people. If windows arenÂ’t used often, keeping a small piece of wood or other sturdy material in the tracks of the window can prevent them from being opened on the outside. Keeping the garage door closed and locked is just as important. A thief can steal a bike and get away even faster than if he were still on foot.
Another important tip for frequent travelers is to keep vacations and trips discreet. Post offices will hold mail for residences so packages and bills donÂ’t pile up in the mailbox, a significant sign that no one is home, and they havenÂ’t been home in a while. Leaving mail in a mailbox for a week or more also increases the chances of identity theft, which can be even more devastating than a home robbery.
Trustworthy neighbors can also be one of the best home security devices. By having someone a family trusts come over to the house and check on things, feeding dogs, watering plants, etc., it may deter home intruders if they know someone comes in frequently. WhatÂ’s even better is if they can trust someone to come house-sit the entire time someone is gone, such as a family member or friend who lives nearby.
Lighting is especially important for burglaries at night time. To determine whether your house has enough light surrounding it, stand outside your home at night and pay attention to doors and pathways. If they are in the shadowy areas, adding a security light, such as one that turns on when motion is detected, can scare intruders enough to send them in another direction.
There is no right answer to determine whether or not to buy an alarm system for a home. Even in respectable neighborhoods, burglaries happen. The most important factor is the level of safety felt in a home and the preliminary precautions taken to prevent intruders.
