(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 26, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a report by Reuters, researchers found that nearly 43 percent of patients who had “limited life expectancies”, meaning they were expected today within 5 years, had skin cancer that actually wasn’t deadly, but instead chose to undergo surgery to have the tumor removed.
Many of those patients reported poor wound healing, and other treatment-related complications, such as pain, numbness and itching. The researchers said that the findings suggest many old people may not live long enough to undergo treatment for skin cancer, but may still be harmed by it
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and non-melanoma types are are fairly easily treatable. Roughly 2.2 million Americans are diagnosed each year with non-melanoma skin cancers. But according to the American Cancer Society, only about 2,000 of those patients die due to those cancers. Usually those patients had underlying medical problems or disease factors that were not in their favor.
While doctors donÂ’t want to restrict access to care for patients, they are treating skin cancers as a one-size fits all disease. Many physicians just use the standard type of care without thinking of the clinical costs. Dr. Ashish Jha, a health policy researcher at Harvard University says too often, medical professionals underestimate how often patients donÂ’t want to receive aggressive care, especially when they are already fragile due to other diseases.
Jha says age should determine treatment. While there are very healthy 85-year-olds, there could be 50- or 60-year olds with many more health problems. Treatment should depend on the patient and the factors of their illnesses and their wishes to undergo a certain degree of aggressive care.
