(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 26, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While there isnÂ’t a direct connection that links getting tattoos to skin cancer, doctors say that you should keep a very close eye on it during the summer and in tanning sessions.
According to one tattoo owner, Melissa Sabatini, she got her first tattoo 18 years ago when all of her friends were doing the same thing. What she didnÂ’t anticipate was the flat, dark spot at the edge of the dark ink that continued to get darker over a period of six months. When she brought it up to her doctor, she ultimately decided to have it all removed.
John Nasci had a similar experience after getting a tattoo. He started noticing a little red mark around his after about three or four years. He went to the doctor, who decided to biopsy it. Unfortunately, Nasci had abnormal growing cells. While it was only precancer in MelissaÂ’s case, John was diagnosed with a full blown version of the deadly skin cancer melanoma.
While there hasnÂ’t been a direct correlation found for tattoos and cancer, thereÂ’s a combination of things going on. First, more young adults are getting skin cancer in general. More young people are also getting tattoos, so itÂ’s indicative that you will find young adults with tattoos and skin cancer.
Darker pigments on some tattoos might mask problem areas of the skin. If someone doesnÂ’t notice it right away, it could lead to a late diagnosis.
So right now, tattoos and melanoma are purely coincidental. But other skin conditions are directly related to tattoos, such as allergic reactions, skin infections, and hepatitis, all of which could lower the blood count and foster a good environment for abnormal cells that eventually grow into cancer.
