3-D Printing Gives Rise to 'Desktop Manufacturing'

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 05, 2013 ) New York, NY -- Almost anything, from customizable toys to medical prosthetics can be designed and made by just about anyone with access to a 3-D printer. Chris Anderson suspects it is going to lead to a surge of “new stuff” and give rise to desktop manufacturing.

Just as it is easy to write up a blog post, soon, 3D modeling software will make it nearly that easy to create a physical thing. The technology for 3D printing has been around for a long time, but in the past five years, digital technologies for the modeling and printing of 3D objects have become cheaper and accessible enough for ordinary people to make prototypes of objects that, until recently, could only be made by those who owned factories or were skilled machinists and inventors.

Anderson, a former editor-in-chief of Wired magazine, and the doting father of five children, described his own discovery of just how easy it is now to order custom-made objects online. He and his kids designed a blimp kit, and they were so popular, everyone around them wanted one. He had to find a manufacturer for the motors, and once he got in touch with one, they told him how easy it was to create his own motor with a 3D printer. He added that artists "are really embracing the 3D-printer technology because they can create really complex designs easily."

What this means is, creating things is no longer in the realm of professionals. You can photocopy things that are in your pocket, and make copies. Anderson showed how a free application for a smartphone called Autodesk 123D Catch can create a 3D model from images recorded by simply rotating your smartphone around an object, such as another phone or even a person's head.
