(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Traders associated some of the selling to global index rebalances and reallocation of investments and stocks, but a desire to protect profits caused most investors to retreat early in the session.
The S&P 500 ended May upwards of 2.1 percent, its seventh straight month of gains and its longest streak of monthly gains since the late months of 2009.
The benchmark S&P 500 index is up 14.3 percent in 2013 after repeatedly scaling record highs, scoring its best five-month start to the year since early in 1997. For several months since November, the S&P 500 has climbed 15.5 percent in total.
For the month of May, the Dow rose 1.9 percent and the Nasdaq gained 3.8 percent, making Wall Street stock look pretty well to end the month.
Trading was volatile during last week, with traders being careful to make sure the companies kept a gain for month of May, on concerns that the U.S. Federal Reserve may let go of its strict monetary policy, the main power behind the strong rally in equities for this year.
