(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 07, 2013 ) Calabasas, CA -- The researchers at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology have taken noticeable steps towards printing what is known as 'organic optoelectronic'. This advancement places the UAE firmly on the entirety of the global map with the new promising sector.
Printed electronics is what can be described as a combination of both technologies in printing, as well as those in electronics and chemistry alike. Industries from across the globe are now embracing that nascent sector for commercial application of the advancements.
Dr. Samuele Lilliu, a postdoctoral fellow working at the Nano-Optics and Optoelectronic Research (NOOR) Laboratory under Dr. Marcus Dahlem, Assistant Professor, Microsystems Engineering, is currently in the lead of a major project on organic photodetectors, which include solar cells and photodiodes. The novel research strategies and innovative concepts that the team are working towards are also being developed in order to make the Masdar Institute a viable contender in the field of printed electronics.
Recently, a study for IDTechEx, a consulting company for the printed electronics, showed that the market for printed and potentially printed electronics are worth $9.4 billion in total. The study was conducted in the Silicon Valley area, at the Front & Sullivan has also predicted that the printed electronics field is set to grow tremendously in the near future. The firm stated it could see growth exceeding 100% in the next 24 months, reaching as much as $25 billion.
Masdar Institute has been following the trend closely, and installed the Fujifilm Dimatix DMP2831, which is one of the most flexible tools for ink development for inkjet-printing.
“Dr Lilliu fabricated the first high-quality inkjet-printed organic photodiodes at Dr. Sandro Tedde’s labs in Siemens AG, Germany, which currently holds the largest patent portfolio on organic photodiodes. His experience holds the key and his research project brings value to Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” Dr Dahlem stated.
