(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 10, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) believes that all it takes to change a child’s life is one hour a week As part of the “Read. Tutor. Mentor.” challenge, Colts veteran Safety Antoine Bethea and UWCI recruited 500 volunteers to take an hour out of the week to help children and reduce high school dropout rates. The kick off for this year’s challenge took place on Thursday, June 6, 2013 on Monument Circle in Indianapolis.
Thousands of volunteers and local students from IPS #56 joined together for a choral reading of the popular children’s book,Oh the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Bethea made an appearance at 1 p.m. to thank the readers and recruit volunteers to make the pledge to “Read. Tutor. Mentor”.
Many other locations kicked off the event as well, as part of their communitiesÂ’ way of bettering the high school dropout rates of kids in their areas. These communities include Boone County Courthouse, Fishers, Hancock County,. and Morgan County.
Every year more than one million students drop out of high school in the United States. That’s about 2,200 kids a day all across America. The “Read. Tutor. Mentor.” challenge initiative is part of a larger national movement by United Way Worldwide to reduce the number of high school dropouts by 50 percent before 2018.
