(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 10, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Tea Party and other conservative groups are barnstorming state capitals all over the United States to stop an Obama administration-backed initiative to impose federal math and English education standards on public schools.
Though conservatives have long argued that state and local officials can make better decisions for their communitiesÂ’ education programs, the Tea Party's opposition to the federal program -- Common Core State Standards -- represents a pivot for the movement, which started in 2009 to promote lower taxes and smaller government.
According to Lee Ann Burkholder, founder of the 9/12 Patriots in York, Pa., the group is making some gains and raising awareness as some states consider putting a hold on the program for further investigation about how well it would help children.
Burkholder said her group held a meeting about the education issue this past spring and it attracted over 400 people, double the usual number, showing that parents are interested and passionate about their children'sÂ’ well being. The meeting was followed by a bus trip to the state capital in which members wore matching T-shirts and pressed their case to lawmakers.
Lawmakers of all political parties, including those seeking re-election in the coming campaigns, have taken notice, especially after hearing about unreluctant Tea Party groups vowing to back challengers to those who continue to support Common Core.
Seven state legislatures have supposedly proposed legislation to delay implementation. Already, two states with Republican governors, Indiana and Pennsylvania, have put the program on hold.
