New Anti Revenge-Porn Bill Moving Through Senate

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 10, 2013 ) Los Angeles, CA -- A new law is being floated that, if put into practice, will punish ex-lovers who post their online nudes of partners. The law has recently passed the Senate Public Safety Committee on Tuesday.

Senate Bill 255 is created to give California law enforcement a tool to combat against the “revenge porn,” trend that has been consistently prevailing on the internet for the past decade. Images that are placed on the internet without the victim's consent, and any like information that is accompanied by information of the victim will now be illegal.

Cyber revenge is most typically found when there is a bitter break-up, according to Senator Anthony Cannella, who has authored the bill.

“People who post or text pictures that are meant to be private as a way to seek revenge are reprehensible,” Cannella said in a statement. “Too many have had their lives upended because of an action of another that they trusted.”

There are currently websites that specialize in the posting of such revenge images and videos. According to Cannella, the websites charge the victims of the crimes “unreasonable” fees to take down said images. Although, it must be asked: Why qualify it with “unreasonable” and instead just say that it is wrong to charge at all?

Several lawmakers have signed onto the bill as current co-authors, which pleases Cannella.

“As we shine a greater light on this program, more people understand laws need to be changed to keep up with this technology,” spokesman Jeff Macadeo said. “Technology has moved quicker and we’re playing catch up.”

The bill has been inspired as the usual reactionary lawmaking, following a 15-year-old Northern California girl killing herself after three boys took pictures of themselves usually assaulting her at a party.
