Facebook ‘Likes’ Translate to Viewership According to Study

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 10, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Those who 'Like' a television show on Facebook are, according to new research from Viacom, likely to watch the show itself when it airs.

The study was gathered by the Viacom International Media Networks, and took in over 5,000 viewers of Viacom's viewing habits. The subjects ranged in age from 18 to 49, and resided in either the United States, Germany, Brazil, Russia, or the United Kingdom. All of those who were utilized were active on at least two separate social network sites.

Viacom stated that the study found that social media was the third most utilized source of discovering shows. Thirty-nine percent of viewers used at least one social media network to discover a new show, while 50% utilized word of mouth. Trailers was the first most used form of discovery, at 54% overall.

The study found over two-thirds (70%) of all respondents were likely to watch the debuts of a show they discovered on a social media site. That tally was considerably higher than the 48% of those shows that whose debuts were watched after other forms of promotion and discovery. For shows discovered past their first season, 41% of individuals would watch the debut after discovering it on social media. That was 12 points higher than through other forms of discovery.

Overall, 45% of all respondents used social media to keep up with shows, while 44% stay informed regarding airing dates. Of all respondents, 37% access exclusive information regarding shows. Viewers ages 13- through 17-years-old were the most likely to utilized the social media outlets as a way to keep up with show schedules. Those between the ages of 18 and 24 were most likely to search for spoilers.

Also found in the study, 30% of all respondents played games that related to TV shows, while 75% of those individuals play the games while the show is out of season. Meanwhile, 25% of all respondents utilized social media to play such show-related games.
