Study Shows Dove Virals Ads Misleading

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 15, 2013 ) Gettysburg, PA -- While a recent Dove campaign looked to boost the egos of women who are hard on themselves, a study is showing a disagreement that others see us as more beautiful than we do.

Dove launched a three-minute video in April that was titled “Dove Real Beauty Sketches”, which gained almost instant popularity from millions. It was, in short, a successful viral campaign and was talked about across the board. In the video, a small group of women described their face to a person who could not see them. The person was a forensic artist who would then draw the woman based upon the description. Prior to the verbal interaction, the woman would be asked to socialize with a strangers who would later describe the woman to the forensic artist (separately).

In the end, the woman would be shown the drawings. Many times, the woman would realize the drawings of a stranger was 'more beautiful' than her own. In the end, the video would close with a quote: “You are more beautiful than you think.”

However, according to a study from the University of Chicago, along with the University of Virginia, that is not a true case.

While the idea is appealing, and it is likely true that individuals are hard on themselves, studies are showing that the Dove commercial is not honest about the reality of the situation. In reality, individuals tend to believe they are better looking than they actually are. It is a more standard human tendency to see things in happier terms when it has to do with one's self. Many believe they are better than they really are in many different ways.

Nicholas Epley of the University of Chicago, along with Erin Whitchurch from the University of Virginia did a series of studies. In the research, pictures were taken of individuals, and the computers were then used to make individuals more or less attractive. Participants were told that they would be presented with a series of images, including their own. They were then asked to identify those that were or were not modified. Participants were found to be more likely to choose an attractive modification as an unmodified picture.

Participants were then asked to show photos of themselves to separate participants, and later those strangers were asked to recall the likeness of the individual. They were asked to select the modified or unmodified photos, and the strangers tended to choose the unmodified photo, rather than one that made the participant look more attractive.
