The infograph cites the Federal Reserve Board of New York, which reports that over 37 million Americans, students and those that dropped out or graduated, have outstanding loans. These debts were from loans that students helped pay for tuition, books and living expenses while in school.
While nearly 20 million Americans attend college each year, recent U.S. reports show that there is almost one trillion dollars worth of outstanding student loan debt in America. $864 billion of that money is from federal student loans such as Stafford and Sallie Mae, and $150 billion are from private institutions, which are not backed by the federal government.
According to the infograph, the average student loan debt in 2012 was $24,301, but 25 percent of borrowers owe more than $28,000. Ten percent of borrowers owe more than $54,000 and three percent owe over $100,000, and while it isnÂ’t much of a percentage, over 167,000 people owe $200,000 or more in student loans.
Of the 37 million borrowers with outstanding student loan debts, 40 percent of them are under the age of 30. Nearly 42 percent are between the ages of 30 and 50 and an estimated 17 percent are older than 50.
