(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 23, 2013 ) Dallas, TX -- Within the neighborhood of Moore, Oklahoma that was hit by the monster tornado has seen two houses somehow survive the devastation. Each home is an island among wreckage that is only now being fully cleared out following the devastation.
The walls and roofs of the buildings in the new Featherstone Addition only has the concrete foundation left standing while other homes are completely gone.
The two comes were not exactly spared wholly, says David Prevatt, an engineer who surveyed the damage of Moore following the EF5 tornado that left the town decimated.
Prevatt is sure the houses survived solely due to being built on strong foundations compared to many houses in Oklahoma and the remainder of “Tornado Alley”.
“This notion that we cannot engineer buildings economically to withstand tornado loads is a fallacy," said Prevatt, who has studied damage from hurricanes and the devastating tornadoes in 2011 in Joplin, Missouri and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The cost of damage left by the tornadoes is high, and over the last five years there has been the highest number of thunderstorm damage in U.S. History. It is nothing new, as tornadoes are already the most costly natural disaster on a regular basis year-to-year. In 2011 an estimated $47 billion in damage was incurred, and the insured lost $26 billion, according to Munich RE.
But the rise in overall damage costs has increased thanks to the density of population rising across the dangerous zones of the United States. Still, the fact that many buildings were found to not be able to withstand even a modest storm has many taking note of the current status of damage in recent years.
"We have to stop this cycle of a storm coming along destroying things and we build them back the same," said Leslie Chapman-Henderson, chief executive of the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, a consumer group. "That is the official definition of insanity."
