Research Shows Graphene Perfect Surface for Diamond Work

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 26, 2013 ) Dallas, TX -- In what could be the epitome of heat sink is made possible only due to the ever-growing capabilities of graphene. The carbon is one atom thick and can act as a go-between which allows vertically aligned carbon nanotubes to be created on almost any item.

The big news to many, is that such activity is possible on diamonds. A diamond film/graphene/nanotube structure can be the result, and has been so in one such research study from Rice University and the Honda Research Institute in the United States. The research was recently reported in the Nature's online journal of Scientific Reports.

The research is an exciting revelation in the field of graphene work. It is used as a sort of middleman for surfaces that are considered unusable for such carbon nanotubes, allowing them such a possibility. Diamond is actually a quality example, according to the head researcher, Pulickel Ajayan.

Diamond is capable of handling intense levels of head very well; however, the available surface area to utilize is low. Given anything as small as graphene (one atom) is, by its very definition a one 100% surface item, it works as a perfect catalyst for the work through its nanotubing.

“Further work along these lines could produce such structures as patterned nanotube arrays on diamond that could be utilized in electronic devices," Ajayan said. Graphene and metallic nanotubes are also highly conductive; in combination with metallic substrates, they may also have uses in advanced electronics, he said.

The research team found that a single-layer graphene was able to do the job to create sheets with ripples in order to create the best working surface. Researchers noted that the nanotubes were able to keep catalyst particles from clumping.

That might be one of the big things about graphene, that you can have a noninvasive coating that keeps the property of the substrate but adds value," Ajayan said. "Here it allows the catalytic activity but stops the catalyst from aggregating."
