New Infographic Launched on Single Parent Families

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 26, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- SingleMommie.com recently released a new info-graphic on single parenthood. With true insight and facts, this informative piece is a must for any single parent. According to the infographic, 4 out of 10 children are born to unmarried women. 455 of single parents are also divorced, separated, or widowed. While 50% of single parents have one child, 30% have two children. 20% of single parents also have more than two children.

The infographic features timely information on the alarming state of single parenthood. In fact, the number of single parents has increased by leaps and bounds since 2011. Based on the infographic, there were 10,300,000 single mothers as of 2012. This is 300,000 more single mothers than the prior year. There were also 1,900,000 single fathers as of 2012. This is 200,000 more single fathers than the prior year. As of 2012, 16% of single parents are dads, while an astounding 84% are moms.

According to this vital and informative graphic, 75% of single mothers are unemployed. 66% of single mothers, however, are employed full time. Regardless of full time employment, these single parents are not assured financial security. In fact, over 50% of single mothers that are employed make less than $25,000 a year. One in every three single families also receives some type of child support. With the latter, an average of $300 per month is secured via child support payments.

Despite these numbers and figures, there are ways to help single parents. This includes creating new jobs, which can help them secure gainful employment. Single fathers and mothers also need to be educated or taught new skill sets. Most of all, these parents need plenty of support and encouragement on all levels.

The infographic also highlights the costs of raising a child. On average, the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 years old comes out to $227,000. While 8% of these costs are allocated for health care, 16% goes to food and proper nourishment. 18% is also spent on child care and education, while 28% falls under “other” or miscellaneous expenses. By far, the largest percentage in costs goes to housing. This comes out to about 30% overall.

Most times, raising a child on your own is also synonymous with poverty issues. In fact, the poverty rate in 2011 was 40%. When people think of poverty, however, they should understand that this constitutes low-income families that earn less than $15,030 a year. Based on the infographic, 2 out of 3 single mothers are poor. About 1 out of 5 children are also poor, which totals 16,000,000 kids or 22%. 47% of these kids also come from single parent families.

In terms of ethnicities, 33% of white single parent families live at or below the poverty line. While 49% are Hispanic, 53% of these families are Native American. An additional 26% of these families are Asian, while 47% are black or African-American. If you hate to see these single parents and children suffer, there are ways you can help. For one, you can donate to BridgeofHopeInc.org or SingleParentAdvocate.org. You can also assist these families by educating them on financial management and helpful resources. One of the best ways to help is by donating food and clothes, along with volunteering in your local community.

In terms of welfare, public assistance, and food stamps, 2/5 of single mothers are food insecure. 8/10 homeless families are also headed by single women with children. 2/5 of single mothers, however, do receive food stamps. Among children with single mothers, 41% of them get food stamps as well. While only 1 out of 10 single mothers receive TANF, this represents 90% of all TANF families.

As always, there are ways we can help. This includes donations to Warrick Dunn Charities or Helping Hands for Single Moms. You can also participate in neighborhood food drives, or prepare holiday meals for these families. Sadly, a number of single parents and their dependents lack proper education. In fact, 17% of them have not completed high school. While 25% of single parents do have college degrees, most of them do not.

Single parents wishing to pursue or complete educational endeavors certainly need more financial aid than the average student. Out of all the families, 62% of single parents seeking post-secondary education have an expected family contribution (EFC) of zero. This is compared to the 20% of post-secondary students without children, and 18% of married student parents. Without financial aid, a total of 1,500,000 single mother students have little to no means of financially contributing to their educational expenses.
