Study Reveals Online Relationships Have Slightly Stronger Marriages

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 29, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study is showing that finding a perfect mate, while still difficult, may be easier to find thanks to the internet. According to new research, married couples who met online have a slightly higher opportunity of staying together 'the old-fashioned way'.

While the difference was not jaw-dropping in separation from standard relationships, the positive gain was still there. Researchers who study marriage say that the study does still hold some weaknesses, and individuals should not assume that the study shows that online dating is universally better. Still, John Cacioppo from the University of Chicago stated that it should give considerable comfort to those who see online dating as a poor way to meet anyone.

“I hope this encourages people to feel authentic and not odd if they feel so busy that they’re going online to meet people,” said Cacioppo, director of the university’s Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience. “It’s a new environment and a new world, and it’s not one we should be afraid of.”

The study stemmed form numbers collected from eHarmony, and was commissioned by Harris Interactive in order to conduct an online survey. Over 19,000 individuals from the United States were used within the study, each of whom was married to members of the opposing sex between 2005 and 2012. The researchers used independent statisticians to verify results.

Divorce and separation numbers were small, as marriages were still new. Only 5% of individuals had filed for divorce, while 2.5% were separated. Researchers found over a third of those surveyed met online. Forty-five percent met online, and 21% met through social online networks.

Out of those who met offline, 7.6% had been divorced. Of those who met online, 5.9% had filed for divorce. The numbers also expressed that those who met online were actually more happy overall. It should be noted that spouses did not get a say in the survey.
