Electronic Cigarettes Prove Useful For Those Who DonÂ’t Plan On Quitting

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 01, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to the latest studies, even amongst those who do not intend to quit their smoking habit find they smoke less when they utilize e-cigs. Italian researchers noted the results in a trial that explored e-cigarettes use for quitting smoking.

The study also found that 13% of participants no longer smoked regular cigarettes at all 12 months following the study. While the study was not billed as a smoke-quit study, after more than 50% of all participants cut their tobacco habit back following use of e-cigs, researchers had to take notice. The percentage of those who quit smoking completely was found to be near equal to certain medication studies, according to the authors of the study to the PLOS ONE publication.

"I think the main message of the study is that we can use these products as an extraordinary tobacco control tool," Dr. Riccardo Polosa, the new study's senior author from the University of Catania, told Reuters Health.

"This really is the first clinical trial that's ever been reported on electronic cigarettes. There has been survey evidence and anecdotal reports, but this is the first serious study," said Dr. Michael Siegel, who studies e-cigarettes but wasn't involved in the new research.

While studies for the electronic alternatives found users cut back smoking without encouragement, the studies still need to be given a wider scope, according to the authors. The current research is not abhorrently small however, as 300 individuals from 2010 to 2011 were used. All were smokers and stated they had no intention of quitting at the start of the study. The participants were randomized into three groups.

One group had e-cigs that contained nicotine, while others started with the same nicotine amount which was then switched to lesser nicotine totals. The third group was given nicotine cartridges that contained no actual nicotine in them.

At the study's conclusion, 13% of the group who had the highest-dose no longer smoked. Only 9% of those with reduced totals quit their habit, while 4% of the group without nicotine quit.
