6 Facts About Glow Sticks

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 29, 2013 ) Chicago, IL -- When people think of glow sticks, they think of parties and other social events. However, few people know all the facts and original purpose of glow sticks.

1. They were originally invented in the early sixties by the US Navy as a safety light. They needed a safe light that was 100% waterproof and extremely bright. Due to the durable and robust design, glow sticks were used as overboard flotation lights and target markers.

2. After the Navy, the military began using them as well. They were used as parachute drop markers and as a safety light in areas where there were possible gas leaks.

3. Eventually, glow sticks became more mainstream and civilians began using them. At the start, civilians used them for all their outdoor activities such as camping and fishing. However, as they grew in popularity there bright glow could be seen in concerts and big social gatherings. They are now widely used to decorate parties and entertain guests.

4. The "glow" of a glow stick can be controlled through the temperature. The "glow" is a by-product of a chemical reaction inside the stick. This reaction can be sped up or slowed down by changing the temperature; hence making it brighter or dimmer. If the glow stick is heated up it will glow brighter for a shorter period of time and if it is cooled down to an extremely low temperature, it will glow longer but not as bright.

5. Glowsticks are affected by temperature. The chemical reaction inside a glowstick is sensitive to heat and extreme cold. The speed of the chemical reaction speeds up considerably in high temperatures causing the glowstick to glow brighter but for a shorter period of time. Exposure to extreme cold and freezing conditions dramatically slows down the chemical reaction resulting in a duller glow that lasts much longer than usual, so, to prolong the life of a glowstick, pop it in the freezer.

6. Lastly, yellow and green are the brightest glowing colours. So these colours are ideal if you need the sticks for any night time activity
