(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 01, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A recent study conducted by undergraduates at the Columbia College in Chicago determined the common traits in the most popular YouTube channels. The study involved the analysis of the top two hundred and forty-one channels.
Short videos are often associated with YouTube. However, the most popular sites tended to have average video lengths of over four minutes. The students found that producing regular episodic content was much more important than video length.
The students next looked at the ratio of comments to views. The analysis of the ratios determined that trend followers on YouTube visit some of the top sites but do not engage as participants in discussions. Popularity can bring in outside viewers but does not keep them as fans. Regularly scheduled content was much more effective in keeping the ratio of comments to views (and fan base) high.
The conclusion of the study determined that the short length video, that is designed to go viral, might be effective in bringing in viewers. However, the traffic is short term and does not create subscribers. A more effective way to gain subscribers is regularly scheduled content of a longer duration. Viewers are looking for a site they can visit repeatedly, knowing what to expect and receiving it. To gain subscribers, top YouTube channels provide a consistent product. The commonality in the top sites is reliable content. These are the sites with the most subscribers and long-term fans.
