(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 03, 2013 ) New City, NY -- The genus of Passiflora contains roughly 530 species, the most famous and favorite being the passion fruit. It is native to the United States and Mexico as well as some parts of the Central and South America. In addition, there are over 24 species indigenous to China. though rare in that region.
Dr. Shawn Krosnick, a professor in the Department of Biology at SAU is the lead author of a new study about the conservation status of Passiflora and its species. According to Krosnick and her team, Passiflora should be classified as critically endangered by the IUCN guidelines. Her team has spent over three years observing these plants and have found just 14 in Hunan.
These flowers are delicate to begin with, as they do not have a large genetic diversity, canÂ’t self-reproduce and have a small population size. Krosnick hopes her study will spark conservationists and botanists to help revive the passiflora.
Already the Passiflora kwangtungensis is believed to be locally extinct in Guangxi, Guangdong, and the province of Jiangxi, China. Observations for this flower began decreasing in the 1970s and it was expected to be extinct in the early 2000s.
No new specimens of this flower has been collected for over 14 years, partly due to rapid deforestation in China.
