The information is based on data released by former NSA agent Edward Snowden, who leaked the program and caused a political uproar and several debates over national security and privacy rights of the American people.
Documents that Der Spiegel, the German newsmagazine quoted from the NSA cited that the US categorizes Germany as a third-class partner and that surveillance on its phone and internet usage was stronger than any other country in the European Union, in the same category as China, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
The documents claim that the US NSA program PRISM monitors phone calls, email, internet chat and even text messages saved through metadata from across the world in its own offices. 20 million German internet and phone connections are monitored on an average day, but those numbers rise to 60 million on busy days.
Edward Snowden, who had fled the United States after he leaked information about the PRISM program, spent a few weeks in Hong Kong seeking a country that would not extradite him back to the United States. Since then, he has been hiding out in Moscow where President Putin says he has refuge. Ecuador, with a very leftist government, is currently reviewing his request for asylum.
