Study Finds Keeping the Brain Challenged Benefits Avoidance of Dementia

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 08, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study published within the journal of Neurology, reading books, writing letters, and working on crossword puzzles during the course of one's life reserves memory faculties and helps fend off the onset of Alzheimer's disease and early-onset dementia.

Rush University Medical Center researchers found that those who utilize such activities stimulate the brain to enact a slower rate of decline in memory as compared to those that do without.

The lead author to the study stated that individuals should not underestimate the everyday activities that can assist in positive effects on the brain. “The brain that we have in old age depends in part on what we habitually ask it to do in life,” he told BBC News. “What you do during your lifetime has a great impact on the likelihood these age-related diseases are going to be expressed.”

The study looked at nearly 300 individuals aged over 55, giving them memory and thinking tests for an average of six years prior to their deaths at the average age of 89. The subjects were given questions regarding their book-reading habits from childhood to their senior years.

“Researchers found that mental activity accounted for a 15% slower rate of cognitive decline.”

After the subjects expired, their brains were studied to note signs of dementia, such as brain plaques and tangles. Both symptoms are considered an indicator of Alzheimer's disease, along with lesions that can appear on the brain. Researchers noted the 15% slower rate of such development in readers. In fact, there was a 32%reduction in cognitive decline for those who engage in “frequent” mental activities. Those who participate in minimal mental activity had an increase of 48% when it came to indicators.

Experts say playing mentally challenging games such as chess, word puzzles, jigsaws, and crosswords benefits all individuals. Pursuing artistic endeavors that develop brain function, such as music or theater was also noted as helpful. Breaking from a routine in mental challenges, or creating new challenges and hurdles for the mind was important as well, according to researches. Reading books or novels, pursuing cultural activities, and finding brain-boosting activities or challenges is overall considered positive.
