(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 08, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A report released Monday in Kathmandu, India found that the countries eighth grade students find mathematics their hardest subject. The government (Ministry of Education) funded research was conducted by the National Assessment of Student Achievement unit of the Education Review Office (ERO). The in depth, broad-based research spanned two years and began in 2010.
The results showed poor overall academic knowledge in students with the national average achievement of all eighth graders at forty-nine percent. The studentÂ’s achievements in Nepali and Social Studies were forty-nine percent but their lowest and poorest performance was in mathematics at forty-three percent.
The study was conducted through questionnaires and interviews, which evaluated the studentÂ’s knowledge on a particular subject. The extensive study covered all of the development and geographical regions across the country including 25 private schools districts and 1,201 community schools districts. It surveyed from among the 1,250 subject teachers, 1,201 headmasters and 48,682 students from these schools districts.
The private schools did better than the community schools with sixty-six percent achievement and forty-four percent achievement respectively, on average. Urban areas came in at fifty-two percent while rural areas measured forty-five percent.
Research team member and under-secretary at the ERO, Bhoj Raj Kafle said, “The performance of schools with poor infrastructure and low school days is degrading. Our study shows that the same education policy and pedagogy is not going to work in every school. The teaching methodology should be different based on the requirement of the particular school.”
Kafle explained that girls tended to be better at Nepali but not as good at technical subjects such as mathematics, than their male counterparts were. “Madhesi communities lead in mathematics with the highest achievement and students from Bahun and Chhetri communities have higher achievement in Nepali and Social Studies,” he concluded.
