(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 08, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The 2013 National Secondary School Mathematics Competition in Nigeria is complete. Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, producers of Cowbell Milk, sponsors the competition. The 13th edition of Prize Giving ceremony for outstanding students was recently held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja and Master Iyola Omonzokpia, a 13-year-old Junior Secondary School student at Loyola Jesuit College, Mangoro, Abuja took home first prize.
Omonzokpia was the overall winner in the Junior Category of the 2013 Cowbell National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition. After the ceremony, he said answering a math problem is as easy as answering his name. “If you ask me what is my name? I don’t have to think about it before telling you because my name is part of me. So, to me solving maths problem is like answering my name,” he said. Omonzokpia thinks there is no sense in having a phobia when it comes to math; it just takes constant practice and remembering your “equations and formulas.” He smiled as he walked home with first prize and a N250,000 cash reward.
After the event, Keith Richards, Chief Executive Officer of Promasidor Nigeria Ltd said, “Our vision is to give all eligible Nigerian children the opportunity to participate in the competition, thus improving their performance in Mathematics.” The primary objective, as he sees it, of the Community Service Relations (CSR) initiative is to spark an interest in Mathematics among secondary school students. Mathematics is the road map to nation building.
The keynote speaker at the event was Professor Adewale Solarin, Director General of National Mathematical Centre (NMC). He reiterated the comment of his colleague and stressed that the objective of the centre was to demystify the study of Mathematics – it is the bedrock in the development of any nation.
Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition started in 1998 in Lagos State alone. In 1999, the range was expanded to other states and by 2001; it had become a national competition covering the thirty-six states of the federation.
