They have been hired by Teleperformance to answer calls from customers with accounts from contracted companies all over the world. The wide range of multilingual abilities of portuguese residents make it easy for the company to match customers with employees that speak their language.
Portugal is a financial economic crisis, but Multinational companies bringing their businesses to the country is helping to offset unemployment rates for middle class citizens who can speak two or more languages, providing them with decent salary, good benefits and labor laws that protect them from overworking.
Strong Western companies are coming back towards home instead of spreading out farther into India, the Philippines and China, where the employees may speak English, but aren’t as multilingual as Portuguese. This is an outsourcing trend called “near-shoring”, for moving companies back from overseas places. Many European companies are placing their call centers in Portugal because there is no currency conversion for pay and there isn’t a significant time difference between the headquarters and their call centers.
In terms of language, Portugal is very educated and economists expect that trait to help the growth of PortugalÂ’s outsourcing industry, and eventually lead to a better economic state for the whole country.
