Experts Looking for Better Ways to Implement TRT Regimens

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The question of whether or not one should take testosterone has been given more credible reason to be discussed following the recent decade's advancement in testosterone replacement
therapies. A lowering of testosterone can result in individuals becoming depressed, having low energy, inability to build muscles, trouble sleeping, a waning libido, and general heart problems.Sales for supplements have more than doubled in the last half-decade, and men over 40 are now asking doctors more readily for the options available to them.

As promising as replacement therapy can be, it is important to educate one's self on the process. The body chemistry itself still holds a few unknowns that are not directly answered by medical science as of yet. Outcomes such as lowered sperm count, lowered efficiency of current semen count, and other side effects such as hastening of prostate cancer are concerns to many physicians.

"You have all the drug companies pushing their formulations, and saying that testosterone replacement is the be-all, end-all," says Dr. Gregory Bernstein, a urologist at Washington Urology at Virginia Hospital Center. "But the fact is, this is sort of in its infancy still. There's a lot we don't know about testosterone."

Some physicians are starting to look at more measured approaches to the therapies available. The belief is that a slower, more drawn-out process of introducing testosterone (as compared to current regimens) is the best way to avoid possible detrimental side effects. "Basically when you have a lot of stress and a lot of information to process, the body's requirement of cortisol goes up, and often the body will rob [from the DHEA] to make more cortisol rather than testosterone,” Said Scott Berlinger, who is a clinical integrative pharmacist who has administered hormone therapy for over 25 years.

“That's why stress can lower libido. Combine that with the amount of toxins the average person consumes, and the process of making testosterone is disrupted.”
