Alarm Systems Deter Crime

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 12, 2013 ) Huntington Beach, CA -- A new study out of the Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice found that burglar alarm systems in residential areas decrease crime. The study incorporated five years of statistics and is the first to focus focus exclusively on alarm systems as the major deterrent, while simultaneously ruling out other factors that could have decreased the crime rate.

Using data from the Newark Police Department, research showed a steadfast decrease in burglaries between 2001 and 2005 in Newark, which coincided with the installation and registration of more home burglar alarms. The author of the study, Dr. Seungmug Lee, received his doctorate from SCJ in 2008 and is currently teaching at Ohio Northern University.

Another finding showed that installed burglar alarms make a home less attractive to potential intruders without displacing the burglars to nearby homes.

The study also found that the community at large felt the deterrent effect of alarms, as neighborhoods with a higher rate of burglar alarms have fewer residential burglaries than those with fewer alarms.

The study was funded by the Alarm Industry Research and Educational Foundation (AIREF), a nonprofit, and conducted over a two-year period. The researchers worked with the cooperation of the Newark Police Department, utilizing five years of police data.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy explained that studies such as this one assist the police department in effectively deploying its limited resources. Furthermore, the School of Criminal Justice helps to keep neighborhoods safe by providing valuable insights into the positive impact of alarm systems in preventing and deterring residential burglaries.

Dr. Lee explained that “this is the most comprehensive study of its kind that has ever been conducted.”

As a result of technological innovations, there is now an increased availability of home security systems, which are more dependable than ever. Now, homeowners have access to digital communicators and microprocessors with refined monitoring technology, and electronic sensors now include infrared, microwave and ultrasonic devices, which previously were only available in expensive commercial applications.
