(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 12, 2013 ) San Clemente, CA -- Released last week, the survey showed that 86 percent of same-sex couples paid for their own wedding compared to just 40 percent of straight couples. In addition, more than half of same-sex couples were more likely to to split the wedding costs evenly, compared with just 19 percent of straight couples.
Diane Anderson-Minshall, editor for The Advocate, a gay news source, said the Supreme CourtÂ’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act in California will help these statistics in the future and is a great opportunity for wedding businesses.
Now, Twelve States and Washington D.C. allow same-sex couples to marry, and while other states donÂ’t permit them to marry in their borders, they do recognize them as a married couple. Anderson-Minshall said she was not surprised by The KnotÂ’s survey findings, because many same-sex couples donÂ’t ask their parents for help to fund the big day or their parents donÂ’t agree with their lifestyle and wonÂ’t pay.
Regardless of configuration of the same sex couples, many of them have not been able to find the support from their families as those in a straight relationship. Anderson-Minshall, 45, got married 22 years ago to a woman who is now a man. Since then, they have had 5 wedding ceremonies.
Anja Winikka, site director for TheKnot.com said that older gay couples are more likely foot their own bill and spend more money on their wedding than younger, same-sex couples.
