(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 12, 2013 ) Newtown Square, PA -- The new parks include playhouses, spinning saucers and cable climbers that help to incorporate every kind of play for every kind of child. Robert Moses, who had previously designed most of the cityÂ’s parks for decades past, had designed old fashion parks with swing sets and seesaws build from stainless steel.
The latest installment is planned for for a neighborhood in Brooklyn that will include a tree house design in Betsy Head Park. This will be the first of the so-called Imaginative Playground, allowing children to interlock hundreds of loose, blue blocks to build whatever they want. The blocks are strong enough to hold children once they build it, so essentially the children to create their own playground.
According to David Rockwell, of Rockwell Group building the Imaginative Playground, itÂ’s a way for kids to feel empowered by their own abilities. It also makes children think and work together, unlike traditional playgrounds where the equipment is stationary and limits the imagination.
Lesley Koplow, director of the Center for Emotionally Responsive Practice who works with children with emotional disabilities including autism, is a supporter of the new playgrounds. She says they give children a break from their structured lives and allow them to structure something themselves.
Old-fashioned playgrounds will still be prominent throughout the city, including swings, merry-go-rounds and slides, but over 215 of those will be renovated to reflect new designs and upgraded equipment to keep the parks looking clean.
