Acupuncture Helps Clear Acne

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 15, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a recent study, acupuncture has been proven as an effective treatment against acne. A meta-analysis was conducted over 43 acupuncture trials involving approximately 3,500 patients. Many different types of acne were investigated, such as papulopustular, vulgaris, polymorphic, adolescent and inflammatory.

The researchers found that when acupuncture complements to therapeutic regime, it enhances the benefits of the treatment and leads to improved patient outcomes. Acupuncture in combination with herbal medicine produces better results than herbal medicine alone—the same goes for herbal face masks.

Researchers also observed that adding cupping therapy improved clinical outcomes. No patients reported any serious adverse effects. The researchers also state that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for acne.

These findings are in line with a recent study that shows how acupuncture can regulate hormone levels in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).This disease is marked by acne, hirsutism, infertility and insulin resistance. The study demonstrated that acupuncture helps to regulate endogenous sex steroids in the blood and ovaries. Conducted by the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, the research was published in the American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), herbal teas and face masks have long been used for the treatment of acne. Qing Dai, an herb, is powdered and mixed with cucumber juice or bitter melon to form a paste, which can then be applied as a mask. The skin absorbs these substances for roughly half an hour. The anti-inflammatory and anti-toxin properties help to cure some of the worst cystic acne.

As a result of this new research, the addition of acne to traditional herbal protocols increases clinical outcomes. According to Prof. Jeffrey Pang, L.Ac., acupuncture functions to open the pores and guide the herbs to their desired location. The Healthcare Medicine Institute where Prof. Pang practices focuses on treating ailments with natural herbs and remedies.
