(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 15, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Cr Wayne Rice, Mayor of Northern Grampians Shire, has welcomed the announcement by the federal government that it will provide $50,000 for the Stawell Gold Mine Future Possibilities Feasibility study.
Cr Rice went to Canberra on two recent trips to lobby the federal government for support, which paid off. He went with other councillors as part of a group of eight local governments, called the Central Highlands group. They went to meet with key independents in order to push for proposals, projects and initiatives that will stimulate the local economy, increase connectivity and safety, create jobs, and attract a greater level of federal funding for the region.
He returned again in June to receive the national award for excellence for a project entitled the Stawell Steps. During this visit, he took the chance to press for funding.
The $50,000 in funding complements the $110,000 given by the state government and the $90,000 provided by Stawell Gold Mines and Northern Grampians Shire Council together.
Representatives from the Stawell Residents Association, Stawell Gold Mines, Northern Grampians Shire Council, Tourism Victoria and the technical reference group for the Big Hill Enhanced Development Project came to meet with Cr Rice to discuss options for the project when it eventually closes.
Cr Rice explained that there have been numerous ideas about the future use of the site, and heÂ’s looking forward to hearing more. Some of the suggestions included an underground rescue mine training center, an underground motel or walking paths.
The next stage of the process will be to build the business case so that they can show it to the federal government in the future in hopes of receiving more funding.
Financial assistance to explore different options for potential uses for the mine site will be provided by the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport.
