(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- ItÂ’s been over 20 years since AOL first made its debut. Now in 2013, communication has made many strides toward advances since the dial up days. But if we consider AOL to be prehistoric, what would it have been like when communication was made simply using smoke signals?
According to the Infograph, “The Chatting Evolution”, communications dates as far back as prehistoric times and ranged from subtle processes of exchange, full conversations and mass communication. However, that communication has advanced over time, mainly due to advantages in communicative technologies, political and economic systems and systems of power or social classes.
It wasnÂ’t until 100,000 BC that historians started to see evidence of speech between people, but in 30,000 BC, cavemen communicated stories and other necessary speech by painting on the inside of cave walls and rocks. Petroglyphs, pictograms and writing followed, and by 27,000 BC some groups of people had designed whole alphabets.
Fast forward to the nearer future in 1792, the optical telegraph was created, the first modern technology of communication. In 1876, music was sent down from one room to another in the first telephone connection. In 1983, the internet became available for public and home use and in 1997 AOL instant messenger was released for people to talk online with their friends and strangers in chat rooms.
In 2012, 65 percent of American consumers engaged in live chat, figures that are up 50.4 percent since 2009.
