According to the tornado warning infographic, about 1,000 tornadoes touch down in the United States every year. Most usually, these tornadoes affect America’s Great Plains, an area also known as “Tornado Valley”, as the area provides the perfect space conditions for tornadoes. This area includes Eastern South Dakota, Eastern Colorado to Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle. However, tornadoes can occur almost anywhere in the Unites States, including west of the rockies and east of the Appalachians.
Extreme tornadoes can attain wind speed of up to 300 miles an hour that can stretch more than two miles across and stay on the ground for dozens of miles before it finally dissipates. These tornados, called supercell tornadoes, most often occur between between 3 and 9 in the evening.
The average tornado has wind speeds that reach 110 miles an hour and spans 250 feet.
The United States experiences an of 80 deaths and 1,500 injuries caused by tornadoes every year. However, the deadliest tornado in American history was completely invisible. In 1925, the Tri State tornado (across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana) left a 220-mile long and 1-mile wide path of destruction that resulted in winds of up 70 miles an hour. 2,000 people were injured and 700 people died and $16 million in properties were lost.
So far in 2013, Oklahoma has had 33 tornados and 44 people have died as a result of tornadoes across America. According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, most deaths are caused by people not taking adequate, safety instructions and those who are not warned about an approaching storm.
