(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- On Wednesday, Blizzard stated that it will offer one free character name change to those with StarCraft 2 accounts. However, the company explained that free name changes are not cumulative, so the newest offer will take the place of all previous unused name changes on the account.
To take advantage of Blizzard’s newest offering, players must log in to Account Management and choose the StarCraft 2 license. From there, go to the bottom of the game license screen and use the dropdown bar in the “Character Name Change” section. Then select a region in which to use the name change. After selecting the region, click “Use Name Change” to finalize your request. After confirming your new name, log in to StarCraft II and begin playing.
Blizzard stated that it is currently internally re-evaluating its approach to the process of character name changes so that free name changes can occur more frequently in the future. The company will release additional details at a later date.
Why is the free name change such a big deal? Well, normally a single character name change costs $10 USD in addition to applicable taxes. This comes after players have purchased both Heart of the Swarm ($40) and Wings of Liberty ($40), so the free name change is definitely a bargain.
After a character has its name changed, the process cannot be repeated for another three days. When this three day waiting period is up, players must purchase a new Character Name Change if they want to change the name again.
After the change has taken place, the characterÂ’s old name is barred from use in the realm for 90 days. When this period is up, the old name can be used by anyone. If a player wants to retain use of an old name, s/he must reclaim it before anyone else does.
