Research: Understanding Side Effects Following Dental Sedation Important

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 18, 2013 ) Monterey, CA -- Priyanshi Ritwick, DDS, MS, and Associate of Pediatric Dentistry at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans has led research that shows some important findings regarding the general side effects in dentistry. The research shows important understanding lingering effects following common procedures.

The work has been published in Anesthesia Progress, and provides both pediatric dentists and parents with information regarding an area that has not been investigated enough with children's dental health care.

The study, which was conducted as the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry, looked into the incidence and duration of common side effects of meperidine and hydroxyzine in contrast to midazolam. The research found that adverse reactions occurred within eight hours on the average, while some had continued adverse effects up to 24 hours later. Researchers noted that the sedated children under the former two compounds experienced vomiting, but not those using midazolam.

Prolonged sleep was also noted higher for those under meperidine and hydroxyzine group, while irritability was more common with midazolam.

The report noted that there 50% of children in each group slept on the way home. Experts noted it as a hazard, saying parents out to be aware the child should stay awake as airway obstruction can occur in the car seats for varying reasons.

"It is critical to know the effects of these medications beyond the time spent by the child in the dental office, so that parents can be appropriately cautioned about the expected effects and how to distinguish them from any potential emergencies such as airway obstruction," says Dr. Ritwik.

The team of researchers also recommended parents educate themselves regarding the medications. Asking dentists and dental assistance for any and all information regarding varying drugs is an important element to being prepared for any/all hazards or possible side effects.
