(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 20, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Two of the largest carriers in Russia, OAO Mobile TeleSystems and Vimpelcom, sold the iPhone, providing 180 million cellphone users with the option for iPhones. But now, they’ve decided to drop the iPhone because Apple wants operators to pay them “huge money”, according to Andrei Dubovskov, CEO of OAO, who says the iPhone sales were giving the company a negative margin due to the fees they incurred for selling the iPhone.
The iPhone was very expensive in Russia. Market value, it sold for $918 because carriers donÂ’t have to subsidize the price, in addition to RussiaÂ’s high taxes on imports on electronics such as the iPhone.
OAO will now be pushing for the Windows Phone, which has been successfully competing against Apple in the same market Share in Russia. Vimplecom will be pushing the Samsung 4S as an alternative to the iPhone for its customers.
Russians will still be able to buy iPhones at full price without contracts at electronic stores and on the grey market and use them on the major carriers, but for Apple the outcome is not looking bright. The iPhoneÂ’s growth is slowing down considerably, according to Business Insider, which has damaged the companyÂ’s stock prices.
