Experts Laugh Off LEGO Expression Hoopla

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 20, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It is rather rate that LEGO toys be considered controversial, or angry, or anything other than a pain to step on and fun to construct. There has been a lot of noise made of a particular study, however, that looked into the evolution of the facial expression that have been printed on LEGO minifigures.

The research was handled by a New Zealand researcher who states the LEGO faces have become more diverse in the past 35 years. That said, the findings also grabbed the attention regarding the facial expression of the LEGO figures, stating they were angry-looking compared to any time prior.

“Our little LEGO study was never intended to give scientific evidence of the minifigures’ harmful effects—it cannot even give a hint,” says Christoph Bartneck, design scientist and lead researcher of the LEGO study. But how did the LEGO study get started? It was all part of a team's larger effort to develop a taxonomical model for LEGO figures, and now the focus has fallen on the brow placement of the little guys.

“The media fights for our attention and one mechanism they use is to invoke fear,” says Bartneck, citing headlines like “Are angry Legos harming our children?,” “Lego study Reveals angry faces on toys could influence your child’s negative behavior,” and “Lego creating more angry faces and it could harm children’s development.” Besides appealing to parental fears, however, these headlines hint at something much more bothersome: most reporters didn’t bother to read the study.

“Around 20% of reporters read the study beforehand,” estimates Bartneck. “The bad ones just copied what everybody else was writing.” This is unfortunate, because the findings of this study are interesting in their own right.
