Kent County Slammed with Downpour

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Over four inches of rain fell on Friday which caused a flooding warning in Kent and Sussex county according to free weather alerts. Both counties did experience subsequent floods thanks to intensive rainfall.

The Dover Police Department made a statement through Captain Timothy Stym regarding the conditions due to weather. He stated that the rain totals near the highest during his own tenor with the police department. He has been on the force since 1990.

“This was definitely substantial,” he said. “We got so much rain in a hurry. It’s one of the more memorable heavy rain storms.”

The police department responded to four motor vehicle accidents that stemmed from weather-related causes. Three vehicles had to be towed from intersections after becoming stuck in water.

The water thankfully receded quickly, and by the evening a good portion of the flooding had already drained away. “This is one of a handful of memorable downpours that has caused us and the city a lot of issues,” said the captain.

The police department itself was hit with some flooding concerns. Located on Bank Lane and Queen Street, the police department is one of the areas where water built up. The fact it floods so quickly near the station does serve as almost an early-warning system for local employees that they must be on alert for flooding in the entire area.

“This is certainly not the first time. We know that when there’s a weather event like this, there are going to be traffic issues,” he said.

High water was seen across the main sections of Dover, such as South Little Creek Road, which was closed due to the flooding. Flooding on Governors Avenue caused the local Medical Center to issue a warning regarding visiting during the flooding period.

“When encountering a road that is covered in water, motorists should not drive through the water, because the road might be damaged under the water,” said DelDOT spokesman James Westhoff on Friday, adding, “Drive cautiously, be polite to each other, and get home safely.”

Dawn Nickerson is the owner of the Frankfurt Bakery, and noted that the downpour that hit in the early afternoon came at a price. “It’s completely impacted our business for the past hour and a half,” she said around 3 p.m.
