BYU Study Finds Digital Link to Kids Strengthens Bond for Parents

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Brigham Young University has a new study that shows the engaging with one's kids through social media helps strengthen the bond between parent and child.

The study has found that the most connected of parents, who use social media such as Twitter and Instagram, are closer to their kids in real life. According to the study, those kids are less likely to be depressed, disconnected, and despondent when it comes to interacting with parents.

The study looked at nearly 500 kids. According to the study on LleibertPub.com, the study looked at the parent-child social networking systems and the outcomes for the adolescents that were followed. The participants within the study completed a questionnaires on social and network use. They were also asked questions regarding connectivity and behavioral outcomes.

Those parents who stayed more connected had children who were associated with a stronger bond to their parents. Feelings between connection and relationships depth between social network and parents was found to have higher prosocial behavior. There was also a noted lowering of internalized behavior, which is key for helping children avoid falling into depressions that can often go unnoticed or unmonitored by parents. To be clear, the study did not state that teenagers who interact with parents on social media like Twitter avoided being withdrawn at times. Instead, it was simply less likely they were wholly withdrawn and hidden from parents.

Those adolescents who were not connected with parents on social media were more likely to be associated with negative outcomes like aggressive or internalized behaviors. They were also found to have more delinquencies and decreased feelings of connectivity.

The study underlines an importance of a new form of keeping in touch and informed about one's children. Simply asking how a child's day was is not enough, though it is still necessary. Being on social media like Twitter helps one stay connected to the child and helps create a stronger overall bond.
