Betting Market as League Predictor for NBA and NFL

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The sports betting market is unmatched in its ability to predict the future. Those who attempt to use opinion, the talking heads on the various sports channels, and better than many who believe they understand how the game works.

A bettor is able to pick the sports or games wherein his own preconceived notions are set aside, and sheer clarity of odds are able to be indicated.

UNLV's Anthony Bennett went No. 1 last week in the NBA Draft. Based primarily upon the offshore odds, Nerlens Noel was first to go by a 67% favorite rating. So what does Bennett mean for the Cleveland faithful? Soon after the drafting of William Hill, the over/under on wins for the season was 31.5 games with a 16% of making the playoffs. Cleveland is clearly moving toward the right direction, without much hope of immediate success.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Celtics and Nets had a huge effect on over/unders with their large moves. Before the trade, Brooklyn was possible to be set as far as 50-1 to win the NBA title. Following the draft, the team was as low as 10-1. With that set number, there are only two teams who are sure to be set ahead of them (the Heat and Thunder).

There is also the Dwight Howard effect. One of the online sportsbooks dropped the Lakers from 25-1 to 30-1. However, Jeff Sherman described Howard's situation was a tangled one, and that made some balk on changing odds until he actually moved.

The impact of betting numbers is not only felt in the NBA, as Aaron Hernandez situation dropped the Patriots from a Super Bowl bid from 7-1 to 8-1. That marking is the first time in a decade the team is not favorites to make their way to the big game at this point in the year.

At the LVH, the Patriots were -7.5 at Buffalo in Week one, which was a move from -7. Week two against the jets saw a two-point move from -12 to -10.
