(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- As a result of the country not requiring employers to offer paid time off for vacation, about a fourth of American workers go without paid vacation or holiday time each year. In fact, the average for paid vacation and holidays in the U.S., which is 16 days in total combined, would not meet the minimum requirement of 9 other countries analyzed by the Center for Economic and Policy Research. However, even when Americans are offered paid vacation, they often donÂ’t take it.
John Schmitt, an author of the study, said that many times economists focus on income and wages and what people earn in a country, but they forget thereÂ’s another aspect, and thatÂ’s leisure time.
In Canada, just north of the United States border, employees are required to get at least 10 vacation days per year, while some European countries require employers to give their staff up to 30 workdays off a year.
While it may seem like AmericanÂ’s donÂ’t take time off because they are better works than the rest of the world, the authors of the survey discourage from making generalizations like that. Germany is considered one of the hardest working countries in the entire world, and they are required to receive 24 paid vacation days off per year.
Many believe that being rewarded with paid time off is a great way to keep from getting burned out from their job and stay positive and on track. Michael Mcrom, executive vice president of Dale Carnegie Training, said many people fear losing their employersÂ’ favor after taking vacation days, but its generally unfounded because bosses understand how easy it is to get burned out and how a little vacation can help get your mind back on the right track.
